German Population Chart.png

The population of Germany in the 1500’s was around 12 million.[i] Nearly everyone – 90% of people – lived in the country and worked as farmers. There were about 3 000 cities and towns scattered across Germany, but most of these were small by today’s standards.

Germany’s largest cities and their populations:

  • Augsburg: 50 000
  • Cologne: 40 000,
  • Nurnburg: 30 000.

All other cities and towns had fewer than 10 000 residents.
